Caroline was in Maastricht for TEDx Urban Development to talk to Riccardo Marini about Happy Cities and she met Dorine, the initiator of HOF, a happy city project in Rotterdam.<\/em><\/p>\n

This summer I had the privilege to speak at TEDX Maastricht about urban development.\u00a0One of my collegue speakers at that TEDX was the famous architect Riccardo Marini from GEHL architects<\/a>.\u00a0He spoke the famous words:<\/p>\n

\u00bbWhy smart cities \u2013 What about Happy\u00ab<\/p>\n

Riccardo spoke about that \u00bbthe notion of efficiency dominates everything we do; this has distorted the value system we use to gauge success. A successful city is not one that is only economically powerful. Perhaps we need to rethink the way we build cities.\u00a0The happiness of people should be more important than making cities efficient.\u00ab<\/p>\n

Spread the world<\/strong>
\nMaking cities happy again, that is what we want to do!\u00a0This is one of the reasons we chased so hard for a few undesirable spaces in the city center of Rotterdam, to be used by entrepreneurs, students and creatives with one purpose: \u00bbMake this place happy again!\u00ab<\/p>\n

First success<\/strong>
\nBesides this project, the city of Rotterdam, wanted to transform the Stadhuisplein, which is now an empty square with lots of empty spaces in the middle of the city center into a lively city square.\u00a0These were the messages I took with me towards the owner of the buildings, which is a big investment company. Normally those companies are not really co-operating, but we kept on \u201cstalking\u201d.<\/p>\n

And finally last month, we were so happy to stamp our Go-PopUp sticker on the window of the first empty shop at the Stadhuisplein.<\/p>\n

Creative Hotspot: HOF<\/strong>
\nWe did not even have to promote our space, because we already got so many requests from nice entrepreneurs, creatives and designers, that we are already chasing for the next empty spaces!<\/p>\n

On 1st October\u00a0we opened up the first PopUp Concept, called HOF<\/a>.<\/p>\n

More than just a Gallery<\/strong>
\nIt’s a Happy City Project where\u00a0a collective of graduates from the famous Art College Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam. Dorine, the initiator, was desperately looking for a space to show her and her classmates\u2019 graduation work and start learning about \u00bbHow to open a PopUp Gallery\u00ab.<\/p>\n

It has become a place\u00a0where meetups take place, such as the \u201cTosti-Treffer\u201d, Yoga sessions, rollerdisco etcetera.<\/p>\n

What a great success!
